Learn More About Our Fall Tillage Equipment!
Tillage equipment is used to ready your acreage for planting by working the soil with a fine texture that is suitable for growing crops. In the past, tillage equipment was pulled by horses or cattle, making it far less efficient. Today, tillage equipment is typically designed to be pulled behind tractors, which takes a great deal of preparation out of the process of seeding. We do offer smaller tillage equipment, designed to tackle smaller fields or gardens, that can be used by an individual. Whether you are looking for small-scale tillage equipment or some larger implements for a full fall harvest, we've got the pieces you need to get the job done at our dealerships!
Some of the most vital pieces of fall tillage implement and attachments you'll find on any large-scale farming operation include disk harrows, cultivators, and plows. If you aren't sure which pieces of tillage equipment you'll need for your next planting season, don't worry, that's where K.C. Nielsen Ltd. dealerships can help! We're proud to serve Northwest Iowa with our farm equipment dealerships from Humboldt to Fort Dodge! We offer a fantastic selection of used tillage equipment to our customers at prices that won't be beaten, so take some time to stop by and check out what we have to offer!
Disk Harrows
Disk harrows, commonly referred to as just "disks", are rows of carbon steel disc blades anchored to a frame that is designed to loosen and lift the soil. Depending on your field, you may want a row of disks that are arranged in two or four sections to repeatedly slice at the ground beneath them. Having the blades arranged as this allows for a uniform cutting pattern and a thorough till which means your field will be properly set up no matter how many acres you are covering! Disk harrows are typically used as a primary method to till the soil, so you'll use these before other pieces of equipment. Since they are the first piece of equipment to hit a field they will traditionally be more powerful and designed to chop up topsoil. There are some situations where using a disk ahead of plowing can help to make the land more usable for seeding, but these are typically unique to a single field or planting season. If you choose to plow after using a disk you'll also get a more complete turn of the soil, meaning you'll be bringing nutrients up at a greater rate than if you did the process in reverse.
If you are looking to implement a disk harrow into your harvesting and planting operations, be sure to visit one of our dealerships to find out more about how best to use this equipment, or search through our used disk harrow inventory.
Cultivators
Next to fall tillage equipment, cultivators are secondary tillage tools that help to stir up the soil beneath the ground. Compared to a disc harrow, which is designed for disturbing topsoil, a cultivator is a more methodical piece of tillage equipment that helps with the amount of resistance you'll face underground. Cultivators disturb soil in a more specific pattern, which makes these tools valuable for working around crops in order to remove weeds. If your fields aren't suitable for planting currently, or face resistance during the fall season, a cultivator is perfect to get the job done. While cultivators are typically hauled behind a tractor and used for large-scale farm work, you may also find uses for them in small-scale or garden work. If you have a smaller garden area that you regularly plan to replant, a cultivator is an easy tool to prepare the soil to a suitable planting consistency. Another interesting use for cultivators involves using them as primary tillage on soil that is particularly loose. Generally, cultivators are a tool for weeding and residue removal in planted fields, but if the soil is weakened they are definitely strong enough to cut through certain types of fields.
